On 14 July 2026, the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Hassan Aden, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Somalia, H.E. Wang Yu, officially signed a landmark agreement granting Somali fishery products duty-free access to the Chinese market. The agreement represents a significant milestone in Somalia’s fisheries sector, as it is the first arrangement to provide Somali fish exports with preferential access to one of the world’s largest consumer markets through a full customs duty exemption.
The agreement is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Somali fishery products, expand export opportunities, and improve market access for Somali fishermen, processors, and exporters. It also reflects the growing economic partnership between Somalia and China and their shared commitment to promoting trade, investment, and sustainable development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, H.E. Ahmed Hassan Aden described the agreement as a major achievement for Somalia’s fisheries sector, emphasizing that it will strengthen bilateral economic relations, attract new investment, and create greater opportunities for those engaged in the fisheries value chain. H.E. Wang Yu, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Somalia, likewise noted that the agreement would facilitate bilateral trade, deepen economic cooperation, and generate mutual benefits for both countries.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy views the agreement as a strategic initiative to promote exports, strengthen Somalia’s blue economy, create employment opportunities, and support long-term economic growth. By securing duty-free access to the Chinese market, the agreement is expected to increase the global competitiveness of Somali fishery products while contributing to the diversification and sustainable development of Somalia’s economy.
