The office of State Attorney was re-established under the law no. 18 of 1976. The major role and function of the State Attorney in Somalia is to act as the principal legal advisor for the national government. The State Attorney of Somalia is also responsible for representing the national government in court or any other legal proceedings to which the national government is a party, with the exception of criminal proceedings. The State Attorney shall be nominated by the President and, with the recommendation of the Council of Ministers of Somalia.
