In June 1974, Somalia coordinated an African diplomatic conference in Mogadishu during the Twenty-Third Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) held from 6 to 11 June 1974. During this meeting, African states adopted the Resolution on the Law of the Sea and discussed common positions in preparation for the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III), emphasizing broader maritime rights and access to the sea for land-locked states as part of a unified African negotiating position.
